Templates built for UK trades

Most invoice templates that rank in the UK were written somewhere else. No CIS line, no reverse charge wording, nothing about what to do when you are not VAT registered. These carry all three.

UK invoice template

Every field a UK invoice legally has to carry, in the order it should appear — with the VAT, no-VAT, CIS and reverse charge sections that generic templates written for other countries leave out.

Plumber invoice template

Built around how a plumbing job is actually billed — call-out, labour by the hour, parts at cost or marked up — with the UK VAT and CIS lines a generic template misses.

Electrician invoice template

Structured the way an electrical job bills — labour, parts, testing and certification — with the certificate references and CIS split that a generic invoice template has nowhere to put.

Job sheet template

The job sheet is what turns a day's work into an accurate invoice and, if it ever comes to it, into evidence. These are the fields worth having on it.

Painting and decorating quote template

Decorating quotes go wrong on preparation and on the number of coats. This template makes both explicit, along with the exclusions that stop a fixed price turning into an argument.

Why a UK template is not the same as an invoice template

The invoice templates that rank for UK searches are, for the most part, US products with a pound sign swapped in. They are not wrong so much as incomplete: they have nowhere to put a CIS deduction, no domestic reverse charge statement, and no warning that showing a VAT line when you are not registered is an offence rather than a formatting choice.

Those three gaps are exactly where UK trades get invoices wrong. Each template here handles them, and links to the CIS deduction calculator and the reverse charge wording where the detail matters.

Questions

Are these templates free?

Yes. Every template is on the page in full, with no sign-up, no email capture and no download gate.

What makes these different from other invoice templates?

Most invoice templates that rank in the UK were written for other countries. They have no CIS line, no domestic reverse charge wording, and no guidance on what to do when you are not VAT registered — which is where UK trades actually get it wrong. These carry all three.

Can I use these if I am not VAT registered?

Yes, and each template says explicitly what to leave off. Do not show a VAT number, a VAT rate or a VAT line, and do not use the word VAT anywhere on the document.

Do I still need software if I have a template?

A template is a starting point, not a system. It does not number your invoices sequentially, it does not chase payment, and it does not keep the digital records Making Tax Digital requires. It is a good way to get the next invoice out; it is not a way to run a year.

Templates get the next invoice out. Software gets the year done.
